The Glass Prism

The Dove Prism


An inverting prism made from high quality  PMMA (acrylic glass), named after its inventor, the physicist and meteorologist Heinrich Dove (1803-1879). Its trapezoidal shape makes it ideal for inverting a picture through total reflection. The long sides of the prism are not polished.


Size: 35 x 20 x 83 mm

 

Facet lens


Acrylic lens in the style of an insect eye. It produces 24 images and is ideal for playing and experimenting.

Polarisation Filter Film


Film for linear polarisation of light. Ideal to prove the light polarisation of certain optical processes (reflection, sky light, etc). Also suitable for self-made photographic filters.

Multi-Spectral Film


Film with two gratings (200 lines per mm) which are rotated by 90º. Produces beautiful rainbow colours when held to the eye or in front of a camera. This film is used in our Twinky, the smallest kaleidoscope in the world (see our Gadgets page).

High quality single lenses and achromatic systems of two lenses. Ideal for experiments and self-made optical instruments. Diameters between 18 and 50 mm, a whole range of different focal lengths. All lenses are surplus from production lines of optical instruments, hence the low price.

The Crystal Ball


A perfectly polished ball made from high quality borosilicate glass. Shows the world from a different perspective, but unfortunately doesn’t tell the future! Comes in a decorative cardboard box.

OptiMedia Fresnel Lenses:

In 1821 the French physicist A.L. Fresnel invented a completely flat lens. Its surface is covered with concentric grooves that refract the light. Nowadays they find wide use e.g. in light houses and overhead projectors. Nevertheless they seem to disagree with everyday experience and baffle kids and adults alike. The Fresnel lenses F-52 and F-53 are well suited as magnifying glasses for reading small text. They are also great bookmarks.

The Newton Window Prism


A rainbow for indoors! This large crown glass prism projects beautiful spectral colours into your room.

Hang the prism in a south-west or south-east facing window. When the low standing sun shines through the prism, it projects fields of spectral colours sideways into the room. A slight spin of the prism makes them dance around beautifully.

The English mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was one of the founding fathers of the modern theory of colours. Prisms, like this one, were commonly known as a toy in Newton’s time, but he was the first one to use them for scientific experiments, leading to his famous Theory of Colours.

Neodymium Magnets:

These high-tech magnets are amongst the strongest industrial magnets in the world. It takes a lot of force to separate them and they can pinch you quite hard if you are not careful. Experience their incredible force acting through thick table tops and attracting iron from a long distance! You need to see it to believe it! The strong magnetic field can best be visualised with our iron filings (424.MEP) in a glass of silicon oil.

Hints: Try not to catch your skin between two magnets, as they can pinch quite hard. Also make sure that you keep the magnets away from magnetic data storage devices like hard drives and floppy disks, as they can be deleted by strong magnetic fields.
